Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging website that allows its users to communicate and stay connected through a series of updates called “tweets”. The service allows users to post their own updates and view other users' updates as it happens in real-time.
The idea behind Twitter is to answer the question “What are you doing”, but users can post anything they want, from news alerts to questions to status updates. Those who subscribe to a specific user’s feed are known as followers and will receive the updates of the user. In contrast, the user being followed will not receive their followers’ updates unless they subscribe to their followers’ feed as well.
The text posts, known as tweets, can be up to 140 characters, which keeps updates short and simple.
